COST ACTION ES1207 EUBREWNET OPEN CONGRESS /14th WMO-GAW BREWER USERS GROUP MEETING
EUBREWNET & WMO GAW BREWER OPERATOR COURSE
State Meteorological Agency of Spain, Tenerife, Spain- 24th – 28th March 2014 –
This is the first announcement for the EUBREWNET training school and Brewer Ozone Spectrophotometer open congress in conjunction with the 14th Biennial WMO-GAW Brewer Users Group Meeting. The event is a joint collaboration of EUBREWNET (COST Action ES1207) and WMO-GAW. The event will be hosted by the State Meteorological Agency of Spain (AEMET) in Tenerife 24-28 of March 2014 with the collaboration of the Spanish Oceanographic Institute.
The training school and congress will focus on operational, scientific and technical issues of the Brewer instrument. The Brewer Ozone Spectrophotometer is widely used throughout the world for ground based total ozone column measurements and can also provide solar spectral UV, Aerosol Optical Depth, NO2 and SO2 data, plus ozone vertical profiles from Umkehr measurements. The aim of EUBREWNET is to establish a coherent network of Brewer Spectrophotometer monitoring stations throughout Europe and to collaborate with other regional networks in order to harmonise operations and develop approaches, practices and protocols to achieve consistency in quality control, quality assurance and coordinated operations.
The week begins with the training course which is mainly practical and will cover the topics of basic operation of the brewer instrument and data reduction. Financial support for students may be available from COST Action ES1207 (COST countries only) or from WMO (developing countries). After the course an open meeting has been organised including scientific discussions of the EUBREWNET working groups: Calibration and Characterization (WG1), Algorithms and data analysis (WG2), Data protocols (WG3) and Networking (WG4). As usual, you are strongly encouraged to submit oral or poster presentations either within the EUBREWNET focus or otherwise. Meeting participants are invited to register their interest and presentations (congress registration form) before the 28th of February.
For those wishing to attend the training school, please complete the school registration form before 8th of January, being sure to indicate if you wish to apply for a support grant. You will be informed before the 1st of February if your grant is approved. In addition for WMO support for students from developing countries, please also contact to your WMO permanent representative.
Registration, accommodation and travel information are available at the EUBREWNET web page (http://eubrewnet.aemet.es). We would appreciate it if you could distribute this notice to any of your colleagues who may be interested and who may not have received the notice via email.

The sessions of the open congress are on focused on scientific & technical discussions about the Brewer instrument, the congress start with an Session dedicated to WMO with the updates form the ozone SAG, database (WOUDC) and calibration facilities complememented with ozone station reports. the next sessions are dedicated to the brewer observations of Ozone , Ultraviolet and Air quality organized as the EUBREWNET working groups: Calibration and Characterization (WG1), Algorithms and data analysis (WG2) , Data protocols (WG3) and Networking (WG4).
WMO /SAG/ WOUDC
Central Calibration facilities
Ozone / Umkehr
Air quality observations (AOD,NO2,SO2)
The course is mainly practical, the objective is that the operator can process and evaluate his own data set and send it regularly to WOUDC database. All participants are requested to bring to the course one year of observations, one-year “raw brewer files” are mandatory (Bfiles, UVfiles and Average files) and will be required before the start of the course.
8 sessions of 90 minutes, 30 minutes (Theory) + 60 minutes(Practice)
|1||Brewer operation||Instrument setup, Control Software setup & Basic maintenance.||Leveling, Sitting internal lamps check and replacement|
|2||Ozone measurements||Measurement principle. Basic data evaluation, WOUDC.||O3brewer software setup and operation|
|3||UV Measurements||Measurement principle, calibration, basic evaluation.||UVbrewer software setup and operation for each station.|
|4||Station measurement program||Instrument schedule guidelines: Ozone, UV,Umkehr.||Build a schedule for every participant station.|
|5||Ozone Measurements II||Advanced data processing, calibration and corrections. ZS sky chart, special measurements..||BFilePro software setup and operation.|
|6||UV measurement II||Advanced data processing. (H. Slaper, spectral/broadband comparison).||SHICRIVM software. UV QA/QC.|
|7||Ozone Measurements III||Ground Base /Satellite comparison. WOUDC. Iberonesia database.||WOUDC data sent.|
|8||Umkehr /AOD/NO2.||Umkehr measurement and data processing.||Software setup.|
The Course will be held at the facilities Oceanographic Institute (IEO) placed in the harbor area of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, there is a frequent bus connection between the city center and the IEO with the 910 bus line (Darsena Pesquera). The IEO is at walking distance from the San Andres village and the Teresitas Beach , where you can find shops and restaurants.
