IX RBCC-E Campaign Arosa, 4 to 25 July, 2014
THE DIRECTOR OF THE FEDERAL OFFICE OF METEOROLOGY AND CLIMATOLOGY, METEOSWISS, SWITZERLAND AND THE PRESIDENT OF THE METEOROLOGICAL STATE AGENCY OF SPAIN (AEMET)
ANNOUNCE
THE NINTH INTERCOMPARISON CAMPAIGN OF THE REGIONAL BREWER CALIBRATION CENTER-EUROPE (RBCC-E)
Will be held at Lichtklimatisches Observatorium LKO (Arosa, Switzerland) 14 to 25 July, 2014
Dear European Brewer spectrophotometer user community member:
This is an invitation to European Brewer operators to participate in the ninth Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) intercomparison that will be held at Arosa Lichtklimatisches Observatorium LKO of MeteoSwiss during the period July 15-25, 2014.
This ninth campaign will be a joint exercise of the Regional Brewer Calibration Canter for Europe (RBCC-E) and MeteoSwiss with the support of the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the EUBREWNET COST ES1207 Action.
In November 2003, and within the GAW/WMO program, the Regional Brewer Calibration Centre for RA-VI Region (Europe) (RBCC-E) was established by Izaña Atmospheric Research Centre (I-ARC) at Izaña Observatory (IZO, Canary Islands), managed by the “Agencia Estatal de Meteorología” (AEMET, Spain). Technical and organization information of the RBCC-E can be obtained at www.rbcc-e.org. At present, the RBCC-E maintains a triad of reference instruments. The Regional Primary Reference Spectrophotometer (B157) and the Regional Travelling Reference Spectrophotometer (B185) are part of the triad. Each spectrophotometer is calibrated independently with the standard Langley method at IZO and since 2011 transfer his own calibration. These instruments are also regularly compared against the World Brewer Reference Triad (BRT) maintained by the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC, Toronto) via the calibration service provided by the International Ozone Services (IOS). The IZO travelling reference (B185) being transported to field calibration missions at different sites in Europe.
In order to maintain the continuity of the calibration scale of the BRT with the current transfer by the RBCC-E, the travelling reference (B017) operated by IOS experts will participate to this intercomparison. This will allow participants to order IOS for technical servicing on their instruments during the campaign. The action focuses on the calibration of Brewer spectrophotometers from south and central Europe
A specific UV campaign of the EMRP-EN03 project “Solar UV” will be performed at Davos organized by PMOD/WRC from 7 to 14 of July of 2014 more information are available at

- Ozone calibration against the RBCC-E travelling reference (B185) and the World travelling reference (B017) managed by IOS (International Ozone Services).
- AOD calibration transferred from RBCC-E travelling instrument.
- Compilation of the calibration histories of the instruments
- Umkehr validation against ozonesondes from Payerne (CH).
Location of the intercomparison
LichtKlimatisches Observatorium MeteoSwiss, Arosa. Accommodation details are given in Annex.
Participants already registered
3 Brewer spectrophotometers from MeteoSwiss
2 Reference Instruments (Brewer #017 and Brewer#185)
Participants to be registered
The organizers can accommodate up to 7 more instruments with up to two operators per instrument.
Technical Requirements
The instruments should be operative, equipped with tripods and run by their usual operator.
History of the instrument (AVG Files), last calibration and recent observations (B files) must be available at the intercomparison. Updated technical aspects can be checked through www.rbcc-e.org.
Funding for instruments maintenance
- Travelling, instrument transportation and accommodation costs should be covered by the participants.
- Extra financial support for developing countries or countries with economies in transition may be available from WMO-GAW. In case of major repairs, the guests can directly order the service with the IOS Company.
- Participants of the EUBREWNET action can ask for support to a Short Term Mission (STM) please contact with your country delegate at the action. (eubrewnet.aemet.es)
