FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT
17th WMO-GAW BREWER OPERATOR COURSE
THE 14th INTERCOMPARISON CAMPAIGN OF THE REGIONAL BREWER CALIBRATION CENTER-EUROPE
“El Arenosillo” Atmospheric Sounding Station, INTA (Huelva, Spain) June 17th to 28th, 2019
This is the announcement for the WMO-GAW Brewer Ozone Spectrophotometer training school and the Total Ozone intercomparison.
The XIV intercomparison campaign will be held at El Arenosillo Atmospheric Sounding Station of the “Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial” (INTA) during the period 17 to 28 of June, 2019. This will be an open campaign to all Total Ozone instruments with can include Dobson, Brewer, Pandora and SAOZ and CCD spectrometers. The Brewer travelling from the Regional Brewer Calibration Center will serve as ozone reference and the QASUME unit from the World Calibration Center will provide the UV calibration for the participating instruments.
The Brewer(*) operator course will be hosted by the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), from the 17th to the 21th of June 2019. The training school will focus on operational, scientific and technical issues of the Brewer instrument. The training course, which is mainly practical, will cover the topics of basic operation of the Brewer instrument and data reduction. As with previous Brewer workshops, you are strongly encouraged to bring your Brewer observations and history and submit oral or poster presentations about your work.
Financial support for attendees from developing countries may be available from the Vienna Convention Trust Fund , the Canadian Brewer Trust Fund and AEMET via WMO. For those wishing to attend the training school and apply for a support grant, please complete the school registration form and contact Geir Braathen GBraathen@wmo.int before 1st of February of 2019. Funding cannot be guaranteed after this deadline.
For those not eligible for a support grant, please complete the school registration form by 1st May 2019.
Registration, accommodation and travel information will also be available at the web page. We would appreciate it if you could distribute this notice to any of your colleagues who may be interested and who may not have received the notice via email.

ANNOUNCE (1st ANNOUNCEMENT)
THE XIV INTERCOMPARISON CAMPAIGN OF THE REGIONAL BREWER CALIBRATION CENTER-EUROPE
&
XVII WMO-GAW BREWER OPERATOR COURSE
Will be held at “El Arenosillo” Atmospheric Sounding Station, INTA
(Huelva, Spain) June 17th to 28th, 2019
Dear Brewer spectrophotometer user community,
This is an invitation to participate in the XIV Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) intercomparison that will be held at El Arenosillo Atmospheric Sounding Station of the “Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial” (INTA) during the period 17 – 28 of June, 2019. This campaign is open to all instruments who can provide total ozone, which can include the participation of Dobson, SAOZ, Pandora, and new developed instruments. This campaign is organized in collaboration with the “Atmospheric Research and Instrumentation Branch” of INTA, with the support of the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
Brewer experts and/or operators are also invited to the brewer operator course celebrated from 17-21 of June, the event will be hosted by the “Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial”. The training school will focus on operational, scientific and technical issues of the Brewer instrument.. The training course, which is mainly practical, will cover the topics of basic operation of the Brewer instrument and data reduction. Registration, accommodation and travel information will also be available at the web page
In November 2003, and within the GAW/WMO program, the Regional Brewer Calibration Centre for RA-VI Region (Europe) (RBCC-E) was established by Izaña Atmospheric Research Centre (IARC) at Izaña Observatory (IZO, Canary Islands), managed by the “Agencia Estatal de Meteorología” (AEMET, Spain). Technical and organization information of the RBCC-E can be obtained at www.rbcc-e.org. At present the RBCC-E maintains a triad of reference instruments. The Regional Primary Reference Spectrophotometer (B#157) and the Regional Travelling Reference Spectrophotometer (B#185) are part of the triad. Each spectrophotometer is calibrated independently with the standard Langley method at IZO. Until now the IZO Triad has been linked to the EC-MSC Word Reference Triad by yearly calibrations towards the International Ozone Services (IOS) travelling reference Brewer 017. Recently however as a result of doubts about the support of the world triad by (EC-MSC), the WMO SAG authorized (at the meeting of 2011) that the RBCC-E transfers its own calibration based on Langley at Izaña Station.
The traveling reference (B#017) operated by IOS experts and the Kipp & Zonen travelling (B158) will participate to this intercomparison. That will allow participants to order IOS or Kipp & Zonen for technical servicing on their instruments during the campaign. The action focuses on the calibration of Brewer spectrophotometers from southern and central Europe.
Additionally, the QASUME unit of the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos / World Radiation Center (PMOD /WRC) will participate and provide a global UV reference spectrum for the ultraviolet measurements.
Schedule of the intercomparison
The campaign is scheduled in three main phases:
-
- Initial calibration to assess the current calibration of the instruments.
-
- Servicing, adjustments and maintenance works characterization test of the instruments.
-
- Final calibration. In this phase the ‘UV’ calibrations against the QASUME
- Specific measurements for Brewer
