FOURTH_INTERCOMPARISON_CAMPAIGN_OF_THE_REGIONAL_BREWER_CALIBRATION_CENTER-EUROPE
Invitation
{| style=“width:75%;” align=“center”
Dear European and Northern Africa Brewer spectrophotometer user community,
This is an invitation to European Brewer experts and/or operators to participate in the fourth Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) intercomparison that will be held at El Arenosillo Atmospheric Sounding Station of the “Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial” (INTA) during the period September 7-17, 2009.<br\> This fourth campaign will be a joint exercise of the Regional Dobson Calibration Center for Europe (RDCC-E) and the Regional Brewer Calibration Center for Europe (RBCC-E) in collaboration with the Area of Instrumentation and Atmospheric Research of INTA, with the support of the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and a CEOS project of the European Space Agency (ESA). =====RBCC-E===== In November 2003, and within the GAW/WMO program, the Regional Brewer Calibration Centre for RA-VI Region (Europe) (RBCC-E) was established by Izaña Atmospheric Research Centre (I-ARC) at Izaña Observatory (IZO, Canary Islands), managed by the “Agencia Estatal de Meteorología” (AEMET, Spain). Technical and organization information of the RBCC-E can be obtained at www.rbcc-e.org. Experts of the Ad-Hoc Regional Brewer Scientific Group (RBSG-E) advice the RBCC-E, see the list in Annex 1, with particular working tasks (see Annex 2). At present, the RBCC-E maintains a triad of reference instruments. The Regional Primary Reference Spectrophotometer (B157) and the Regional Travelling Reference Spectrophotometer (B185) are part of the triad. Each spectrophotometer is calibrated independently with the standard Langley method at IZO. These instruments are also regularly compared against the World Brewer Reference Triad (BRT) maintained by the Meteorological Service of Canada (MSC, Toronto) via the calibration service provided by the International Ozone Services (IOS). The IZO travelling reference (B185) is being transported to field calibration missions at different sites in Europe. In order to maintain the continuity of the calibration scale of the BRT with the current transfer by the RBCC-E, the traveling reference (B017) operated by IOS experts will participate to this intercomparison. That will allow participants to order IOS for technical servicing on their instruments during the campaign. The action focuses on the calibration of Brewer spectrophotometers from southern and central Europe. The Dobson campaign is organized by Regional Dobson Calibration Centre-Europe (WMO-RDCC-RA-VI) managed by the Meteorological Observatory Hohenpeissenberg (Germany) in cooperation with INTA. Four or five Dobson instruments including the European Regional Standard D064 will take part in this campaign. During the first days, both calibration campaigns will be performed independently in parallel, while last days are reserved for the Dobson-Brewer comparison. Additionally, the QASUME unit of the Physikalisch-Meteorologisches Observatorium Davos / World Radiation Center (PMOD /WRC) will participate and provide a global UV reference spectrum for the ultraviolet measurements. =====Schedule of the Intercomparison===== The campaign is scheduled in three main phases: * Initial calibration to assess the current calibration of the instruments * Servicing, adjustments and maintenance works of the instrument * Final calibration. In this phase the 'UV' calibration against the QASUME unit and Umkehr exercise will be performed. 4th RBCC-E Calibration Campaign, September 7-17, 2009 Note: Click on Agenda tab below to see a detailed events list. style="left:0"|title=Events|content= <googlecalendar>10lgt52ll256jpbo6f9t9hjt3g@group.calendar.google.com&title=Iberonesia%20Events&dates=20090901%2F20090930&epr=3</googlecalendar> The following operations are offered by the RBCC-E during the intercomparison: * Ozone calibration against the RBCC-E travelling reference (B185) * Compilation of the calibration histories of the instruments * Umkehr validation against ozonesondes: three ozonesonde launch are scheduled from day 12 to 17 depending on weather conditions The QUASUME (Quality Assurance of Spectral Ultraviolet Measurements in Europe) unit from the PMOD-WRC will provide a UV calibration. =====Location of the Intercomparison===== El Arenosillo Atmospheric Sounding Station (INTA). Accommodation details are explained in Annex 3.<br\> Click Here for a Google Map location. =====Participants Registration===== The organizers can invite up to 7 instruments with up to two operators per instrument. All participants are requested to contact the campaign coordinators and fill the registration forms. =====Technical Requirements===== The instruments should be operative, equipped with tripods and run by their usual operator. History of the instrument (AVG Files), last calibration and recent observations (B files) must be available at the intercomparison. Updated technical aspects can be checked through www.rbcc-e.org. =====Funding for instruments maintenance===== Travelling, instrument transportation and accommodation costs should be covered by the participants. Extra financial support for developing countries or countries with economies in transition may be available from WMO-GAW. In case of major repairs the participants must directly order the service and agree fees with the IOS Company. =====Contact Information===== ===Brewer Campaign coordinator=== Alberto Redondas Meteorological State Agency - AEMET Izaña Atmospheric Research Center I-ARC C/ La Marina, 20, 38071 Santa Cruz de Tenerife Spain Tel: +34-922-574487 Fax: +34-922-574475 Email: <mail pre=“ ”>aredondas@inm.es</mail> ===Local organizer=== Dr Jose Manuel Vilaplana Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial Atmospheric Research and Instrumentation Branch Atmospheric Sounding Station “El Arenosillo” Ctra.
